dailyloe.com – An emergency warning has been issued for residents near Uralla, New South Wales, due to a grass fire. The Rural Fire Service (RFS) reported the blaze is near Burial Ground Gully, between Armidale and Tamworth. Residents have been advised that it is too late to evacuate and should seek immediate shelter.
The fire is currently affecting an area of approximately 19 hectares and is moving westward due to east and north-easterly winds. Areas at risk include Leece Road, Quartz Gully Road, and Wilkens Street. The RFS warns that embers may be blown ahead of the main fire front, potentially igniting spot fires.
Firefighters are actively working to control the blaze. RFS communications officer Victoria Quested stated, “We’ve seen gusts up to about 40 kilometres an hour, so that has created some challenging conditions for our firefighters.” She noted that the dry, high-fuelled grass is exacerbating the fire’s behavior.
Uralla resident Sophie Davies expressed concern as the fire approaches her home. She stated, “The fire has stayed in the gully so far … but it’s pretty close.” The fire is reportedly about 50 meters from her property, and she is prepared to move her ponies if necessary.
Emergency crews are on-site, working to contain the fire and protect properties. The RFS continues to monitor the situation closely as conditions remain volatile.
