A damaged semi-truck carrying 78,000 pounds of scrap metal caused traffic disruptions and power outages in San Jose on Thursday.
The incident occurred when the truck’s rear axle was damaged, putting it at risk of rolling into a nearby power pole. Although the truck did not overturn, authorities acted quickly to prevent a potential disaster.
Significant Traffic Disruption and Power Outage
The San Jose Fire Department reported that the incident took place near South First Street and East Alma Avenue around 9:30 a.m. as the truck attempted to make a turn. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, but the incident prompted Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) to shut off power in the area as a precautionary measure.
As a result, approximately 6,900 customers were left without electricity for most of the afternoon. PG&E stated that power was restored to 3,000 of those customers by 4 p.m. and aimed to have all outages resolved by 6 p.m.
Analysis of the Incident’s Implications
Despite the restoration of power by 6 p.m., a secondary outage affected an additional 3,770 customers later that evening. PG&E has indicated that this second outage was unrelated to the truck incident, and the cause is currently under investigation.
Local resident Drew shared his experience, noting, “Everything went out and just had to keep going out to the… first we had to check if the bathroom died and then it's the whole house. At this point, once I figured out it was the whole street… I'm just worried that the power’s going to be back on before the food in the fridge goes bad.”
Proactive Measures and Community Impact
In light of this incident, authorities evacuated a nearby Sacred Heart Community Service building while crews worked to safely lift the truck. This precautionary action underscores the importance of community safety during such unforeseen events.
The quick response of PG&E and local authorities highlights the need for preparedness in dealing with heavy vehicles in urban areas. The efficient management of the situation prevented any injuries and minimized further disruptions.
