dailyloe.com – Large areas in the southeastern U.S. are currently experiencing an exceptional drought, which is contributing to numerous wildfires in Florida and Georgia. One significant wildfire in southeastern Georgia’s Brantley County had damaged around 90 homes and was threatening hundreds more as of April 26, 2026. This fire had spread to over 20,000 acres by that date.
Another wildfire near the Georgia-Florida border had burned more than 30,000 acres and destroyed approximately 35 structures. Smoke from these wildfires caused air quality alerts in Atlanta, located in the north-central part of Georgia. Meteorology experts are examining the unusual wildfire activity in a region typically known for its thunderstorms and humidity during spring.
Wildfires require specific conditions to thrive, including low relative humidity, dry fuels, and strong winds. The Southeast has been experiencing a drought since July 2025, with the region receiving less than a quarter of its normal rainfall between mid-March and mid-April 2026. Consequently, the U.S. Drought Monitor classified most of this area as being in ‘extreme’ or ‘exceptional’ drought by mid-April.
A persistent high-pressure system over the Southeast has contributed to the lack of rainfall. High-pressure systems cause air to sink toward the surface, inhibiting cloud and precipitation formation. This particular high-pressure system was influenced by a ‘ridge’ in the jet stream, resulting in southeast winds that brought warm and dry air into the region.
The relative humidity has been very low due to higher-than-normal temperatures and lower moisture levels. This has caused trees, grass, and leaves to dry out, creating ample fuel for wildfires. Such dry fuel is prevalent in rural areas of Georgia and northern Florida. Once a fire ignites from sources like lightning or power lines, strong winds can rapidly spread it under these conditions.
Georgia fire officials reported that the largest fire in mid-April was located near the Florida state line. The combination of drought and wind has created a challenging environment for firefighters attempting to control these blazes.
