dailyloe.com – Archaeologists have long debated the origins of the Rongorongo writing system of Rapa Nui, or Easter Island. A recent study utilizing radiocarbon dating has revealed that one of the Rongorongo tablets predates European contact in the 1720s. This finding raises questions about whether the Rapa Nui developed this writing system independently.

The study indicates that the wood from one of the 27 Rongorongo tablets was felled between 1493 and 1509. This date suggests that the Rapa Nui may have created the Rongorongo script before European influence, challenging previous assumptions about its origins. However, researchers note that the sample size is limited, and further studies are necessary for confirmation.

Easter Island, located 2,360 miles off the coast of Chile, was first settled by the Rapa Nui people between 1150 and 1280 CE. The island remained isolated until Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveen arrived in 1722. The Rapa Nui are famous for their moai statues and their unique, undeciphered script known as Rongorongo, which employs pictorial signs.

Rongorongo was first described in 1864, leading to ongoing debates among historians and linguists regarding its origins. The new study suggests that the structure and function of Rongorongo differ significantly from European languages, supporting the notion of independent invention. If confirmed, this would represent a rare instance of a writing system emerging without outside influence.

As research continues, the implications of these findings could reshape the understanding of Easter Island’s history and the development of writing systems in isolated cultures.
