The sequel focuses on a storyline involving Emily Blunt’s character, named Emily. Once the social-climbing assistant to Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly, Blunt’s character now resembles Sánchez Bezos. She works at Christian Dior and is drenched in designer labels. Emily has become the pretentious partner of a billionaire tech mogul played by Justin Theroux.
Theroux’s character is a mashup of Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, sources said. He undergoes a dramatic body transformation, seen in flashbacks wearing layers of fat prosthetics. After coming into extreme wealth, he becomes fit and socially accepted in Miranda’s circle. He lavishly spends on his partner, buying her whatever she wants.
Lucy Liu has been cast as Theroux’s first wife, a do-gooder who solves problems with her divorce windfall. This nods to MacKenzie Scott, Jeff Bezos’s first wife. In mid-April, the New York Times ran a profile of Sánchez Bezos, chronicling how Jeff Bezos has changed. The profile described him as gym-hardened, frequently shirtless, and captured mid-laugh in paparazzi photos on his megayacht.
The original Devil Wears Prada was groundbreaking 20 years ago for its satire of high fashion and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. The sequel targets different power players, focusing on the Bezoses as effigies of the 1%. Blunt’s character is out for revenge, the sources added.
