In the interview, Theron emphasized the importance of supporting these art forms, stating, ‘That was a very reckless comment on two art forms that we need to lift up constantly.’ She added that while AI may take over some roles, it cannot replace live performances.
Theron, who trained at the Joffrey Ballet in New York, shared the physical toll that ballet can take on dancers. She recounted her own experiences, saying, ‘It’s borderline abusive. There were several times that I had blood infections from blisters that just never healed.’
Chalamet’s comments were made during a video conversation with Matthew McConaughey in February, where he expressed disinterest in ballet and opera. He stated, ‘I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera … Things where it’s like, “Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.”’
Theron is not the only one to voice disapproval of Chalamet’s statements. Other high-profile figures, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Misty Copeland, have also expressed their concerns. In contrast, Luca Guadagnino, who directed Chalamet in ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ defended him, questioning how one comment could spark such widespread backlash.
In the same interview, Theron opened up about her challenging childhood in South Africa, detailing her father’s death at the hands of her mother in self-defense. She described her father as a ‘full-blown functioning drunk’ and explained her mother’s decision to send her to boarding school to escape their home life.
Theron recalled the traumatic day of the shooting in June 1991, when her father attempted to break into their home in Benoni. She recounted, ‘He shot through the steel doors to get in, making it very clear that he was going to kill us.’
