The film is directed by Morgan Neville and will be released in theaters by Focus Features on Friday, April 16, 2026. It offers a rare look at the guarded producer who launched the live sketch comedy show in 1975.
The documentary is not a retirement announcement for the 81-year-old showrunner. In one scene, Michaels tells his friend Steve Martin he cannot retire. He states he needs to ‘protect’ ‘SNL’. Director Morgan Neville explained Michaels’ mindset in a recent Zoom interview. Neville said, ‘I think he feels if he opens the door on [retirement] too much, the wolves will circle.’ He added, ‘He likes having the leverage he has now to protect the show.’
Neville said Michaels overcame a long-standing reluctance to be on camera. He did this partly to reveal what it takes to keep ‘SNL’ running. The film provides a window into Michaels’ unique management style. This style has outlasted generations of performers and network executives.
The director took cameras behind the scenes at 30 Rock’s Studio 8H. He captured multiple production weeks of the show. The footage includes the frenzy of pitch meetings and writing nights. It also shows table reads and dress rehearsals.
‘As he says, when he does his job well, it leaves no fingerprints,’ Neville stated. ‘But that doesn’t mean he’s not working very hard. For all of his wanting to be the ‘Wizard of Oz,’ he also wants people to know it’s not easy being the Wizard of Oz.’
Neville interviewed over 50 people in Michaels’ orbit for the film. This includes current and former ‘SNL’ staffers like Tina Fey and Bill Hader. Others interviewed are Andy Samberg, Conan O’Brien, Michael Che, and Colin Jost.
The documentary also features people who have known Michaels the longest. Howard Shore, the first ‘SNL’ music director, is interviewed. Shore met Michaels at summer camp when they were both 14. Rosie Shuster, an early ‘SNL’ writer and Michaels’ first wife, also appears. Michaels met Shuster in high school.
The film is narrated by Chris Parnell. It reveals some of Michaels’ personal quirks. It shows how the show is built around his specific metabolism.[]
