dailyloe.com – Director Andy Serkis announced that Viggo Mortensen is pleased with Jamie Dornan taking over the role of Aragorn in the upcoming film, “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” This news was shared during an episode of the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast.

Serkis emphasized that there are no hard feelings from Mortensen regarding the recasting. He expressed excitement about the project, stating, “we are absolutely thrilled. And, by the way, so is Viggo.”

In addition to directing, Serkis will reprise his iconic role as Gollum. Returning cast members also include Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace as Thranduil.

New cast members in “The Hunt for Gollum” include Kate Winslet as Marigol and Leo Woodall as Halvard. Serkis noted the film’s focus on a deeper psychological exploration of Gollum, one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s most complex characters.

He remarked on the character’s significance, stating, “there is a real relevance.” The movie will cover the search for Gollum in the years leading up to “The Fellowship of the Ring.”

Original trilogy screenwriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have collaborated with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou to adapt the source material for this film.

Serkis remarked, “I think there’s still a wealth of stuff to be got out of the character.” He believes the film fits well between “The Hobbit” trilogy and “The Lord of the Rings.”

“The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is scheduled for release in theaters on December 17, 2027.
