dailyloe.com – Stellantis is considering a plan for its Chinese joint-venture partner Leapmotor to build electric vehicles at an idled plant in Brampton, Ontario, according to a CBC report.
The proposal has drawn swift condemnation from Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the auto workers’ union Unifor.
Premier Doug Ford said the provincial government was ‘dead against this.’ He said it represented ‘everything against what the federal government told the auto workers here in Ontario.’
Unifor President Lana Payne expressed ‘serious concerns’ about the reported plan.
The proposed facility would be a Complete Knock-Down plant, known as CKD.
A CKD plant receives un-assembled parts from another country for final assembly.
In this case, parts like batteries and body panels would come from China.
Flavio Volpe, president of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association, compared it to an ‘IKEA furniture kit.’
Stellantis owns a 21 percent stake in the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor.
The Brampton plant that could be used is currently not in operation.[]
