This book continues her pattern of alternating between her popular “Fourth Wing” series and standalone contemporary novels.
Yarros describes “Peculiar Stars” as a “castaway romance.” The story revolves around Callista, who crashes during a cyclone and must navigate her feelings while stranded on a deserted island with her fiancé’s cousin. “What would you do if you were stranded for 543 days on a deserted island with your fiancé’s cousin?” Yarros asked in a video.
The official synopsis indicates that the romance between Callista and her fiancé’s cousin, an ex-army medic, develops slowly. Initially resisting their connection, they grow closer as the hope of rescue diminishes. The synopsis states, “When they’re finally found, the world hasn’t changed. But they have.”
Yarros expressed excitement about introducing the characters, stating, “I can’t wait for you to meet these characters.” The book will be published by Amazon Publishing’s romance imprint Montlake. This announcement follows the January 2025 release of “Onyx Storm,” the third installment in her “Empyrean” series.
Yarros previously told Jenna Bush Hager in March 2025 that her subsequent work after “Onyx Storm” would also be a romance. She balances writing between fantasy and contemporary romance genres. Her last contemporary romance, titled “Variation,” was released in 2024 and tells the story of a dancer reconnecting with a past love.
In 2023, Yarros gained significant attention with her “Fourth Wing” series, which follows Violet Sorrengail as she trains to become a dragon rider at Basgiath War College. The first book, “Fourth Wing,” was published in May 2023, followed by its sequel, “Iron Flame,” in November 2023.
Yarros has mentioned the need to slow her publishing pace after the release of “Iron Flame.” She has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, which affects her body’s connective tissue, similar to her protagonist in “Fourth Wing.”
