The program offers 2,000 free seats for two-year-olds starting this fall. Applications will open on June 2 and close on June 26, with offers released in August.
Cardi B, a Bronx native, emphasized the program’s importance for working parents in a promotional video. She stated that women often cannot advance their careers without childcare support. The state will fully fund the program for its initial two years of operation.
The first round of seats carries a $73 million price tag. New York state is prepared to spend up to $425 million on the program next year. Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Mamdani first unveiled this initiative in March.
A unique citywide jingle competition accompanies the program launch. New Yorkers are invited to submit original 15 to 30-second jingles encouraging family applications. Submissions must be received online by April 17.
A judging panel including Cardi B will review all competition entries. New Yorkers will then vote to select a final winner. The winning jingle will become the official 2-K theme played on city radio.
Mayor Mamdani quoted Cardi B in an official statement about the program. He said universal child care means families no longer face impossible choices. They can access affordable care while remaining in New York City.
The program initially targets five specific school districts for rollout. These include Manhattan’s District 6 covering Washington Heights and Inwood. Other eligible areas are Hamilton Heights and parts of Manhattan.
