This money was reportedly used to support lavish lifestyles, including luxury cars and trips to Las Vegas. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced a civil lawsuit against the organization and its former directors, Trahern Pollard and Jaclyn McGuigan, on Friday.
The nonprofit was responsible for community outreach and violence prevention efforts but faced allegations of “rampant abuse” and self-dealing. According to the lawsuit, Pollard reportedly pocketed over $6 million from the diverted funds, rather than utilizing them for community benefit.
Pollard’s spending reportedly included luxury vehicles, extensive shopping sprees, and trips to Las Vegas. He is also accused of using funds from the nonprofit to settle personal obligations, including child support and a tax bill with the IRS, while subsidizing his private businesses such as a liquor store and a used car dealership.
McGuigan, who served as the treasurer for the nonprofit, allegedly transferred $1,000 weekly from the charity’s funds to her personal account. She is also accused of embezzling additional funds that she claimed were for administrative expenses.
Ellison stated, “Instead of helping the community, they helped themselves to millions of dollars that should have gone into the community.” This situation reflects broader issues as prosecutors noted that the misuse of funds could affect up to half of the $18 billion in federal funds intended for Minnesota state-run programs.
In the context of this ongoing fraud investigation, significant actions have been taken, including raids conducted by law enforcement at multiple locations in Minnesota.
