Joe Negri, known to many within Pittsburgh as Handyman Negri on “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” has died at the age of 99, just days shy of his 100th birthday. Fred Rogers Productions confirmed his passing to KDKA-TV on Sunday evening. Negri was a broadcasting pioneer, an accomplished musician, and a Pittsburgh icon who left a lasting impact on children’s television.
For more than 30 years, children across America tuned in to “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” to watch Handyman Negri tinkering in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Negri, who played the character, often remarked that his role was purely fictional since he was not particularly handy in real life. “I said, ‘Fred, I’m not handy at all. I can’t even hammer a nail.’ And he said, ‘Don’t worry about a thing, it’s going to be all pretend,'” Negri recalled in a previous interview with KDKA-TV.
Negri’s Musical Journey and Contributions
While Negri may not have been adept at fixing things, he excelled musically. His character eventually ran “Negri’s Music Shop” on the show, where he performed with legendary musicians like Wynton Marsalis, Johnny Costa, and Yo-Yo Ma. “I’m glad he gave me the music shop because it gave me a really good opportunity to utilize my music,” Negri shared.
Born in 1926 in Pittsburgh, Negri began his musical career at just three years old. His father introduced him to the ukulele, which he played to accompany himself while singing. He transitioned to the guitar and found his way onto television during the early days of KDKA-TV, regularly appearing on “The Buzz and Bill Show” in the 1950s.

In 1968, when “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” debuted on WQED, Fred Rogers created the role of “Handyman Negri” specifically for him. This role allowed Negri to showcase his musical talents for nearly 35 years. He described his experience on the show as “a great experience, no kidding.”
Outside of television, Negri taught jazz guitar for nearly 50 years at prominent institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne, and Carnegie Mellon University. He continued to inspire students in music well into his 90s, retiring in 2019.
