dailyloe.com – Jerome Powell is expected to lead the Federal Reserve in a cautious pause on interest rates during what could be his final meeting as chair. The decision comes amid persistent inflation and a resilient labor market, which limit the potential for rate cuts. Elevated energy prices and a labor market that is weak but stable add complexity to the Fed’s considerations.

Roger Ferguson, an economist and former Fed vice chair, stated, “On the dual mandate, they’d say we’re roughly at a stable labor market.” He highlighted that inflation remains a concern with a sticky rate of 3%, suggesting that the Fed may choose to maintain its current stance for now.

Goldman Sachs economist David Mericle anticipates that the post-meeting statement will recognize improvements in the labor market and rising inflation but will keep the existing policy guidance unchanged. He expects a strong consensus among policymakers to remain on hold, with only one dissent anticipated.

Market expectations indicate a 100% likelihood of the FOMC maintaining its current rate, minimizing drama around the decision. Attention is likely to shift to Powell, especially as Kevin Warsh is poised to succeed him when Powell’s term concludes in May.

The forthcoming transition adds uncertainty to the significance of Powell’s post-meeting news conference. Jerry Tempelman, a former senior analyst at the New York Fed, remarked, “If Powell were staying, I might be trying to read more in between the lines of what he says at the press conference.”

Tempelman noted that since Warsh is likely to take over, the language used in Powell’s remarks may become less relevant. From a communication perspective, Tempelman expects the Fed to prioritize discussions on inflation, which recently registered at 3% excluding food and energy.
