The decision stems from a significant decline in sales and a non-renewal of its production agreement with International Trucks. This move highlights the challenges in the medium-duty truck market.
Production of the Silverado medium-duty lineup will officially end on September 30 at International Trucks’ Springfield, Ohio, facility. The models were co-developed with International’s CV Series, and both brands shared the same manufacturing plant. International’s CV Series production is scheduled to stop earlier, on September 10, due to a reliance on Chevrolet’s truck production.
The non-renewal of the 2015 contract with International has led to a substantial shift in production dynamics. The Springfield plant lost a significant portion of its workload, which contributed to International’s decision to sell the facility to Canadian defense contractor Roshel earlier this year. This situation marks a major shift for GM in the commercial truck sector.
The Silverado 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD were designed for serious commercial applications, differentiating them from consumer-focused pickups. These trucks targeted fleets, contractors, and businesses requiring heavy hauling capabilities. Each model was powered by GM’s Duramax 6.6-liter engine, which is known for its strength and reliability.
