The series is set in Moscow in 1977. Two ‘PONIES’ — ‘persons of no interest’ in intelligence speak — work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy. Their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR. The pair then become CIA operatives.
Bea, played by Emilia Clarke, is an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Her cohort Twila, played by Haley Lu Richardson, is a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless. Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy. They also aim to solve the mystery that made them widows.
The cast also includes Adrian Lester, Artjom Gilz, Nicholas Podany, Petro Ninovskyi, and Vic Michaelis. David Iserson serves as co-creator, co-writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Susanna Fogel serves as co-creator, director, co-writer, and executive producer.
Mike Daniels, Jessica Rhoades, and Emilia Clarke executive produce. Co-executive producers include Katherine Bridle, Alison Mo Massey, Jared Ian Goldman, and Rosa Handelman. Ponies is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. The deal with NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution was negotiated by Lucy Criddle.
