dailyloe.com – Courtney Love revealed a specific Nirvana lyric was inspired by Kim Gordon. She made this claim on the podcast The Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan. Love discussed tense interactions from the 1990s music scene.
Love described Gordon’s behavior during that era as ‘really horrible’. She recalled an incident in Holland where Sonic Youth was ‘so mean’. Billy Corgan agreed, stating he was treated rudely by Gordon when paying respects.
Love directly attributed a lyric from ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ to this dynamic. She said the line ‘Forever in debt to your priceless advice’ is about Kim Gordon. Love stated Kurt Cobain ‘was so mad at her’ at the time.
She elaborated on Cobain’s perceived position within the indie music world. Love suggested he hid his light due to Seattle’s scene and ‘pernicious indie politics’. Gordon was cited as a figure within those politics.
Love claimed the experience left her personally ‘scarred’. She said she wrote Gordon a letter ‘kissing her ass’ as a result. Love noted you ‘go for the wife’, not the ‘cool husband’.
Despite the alleged tension, Kim Gordon later produced Hole’s debut album. That album was titled Pretty on the Inside. The song ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ appeared on Nirvana’s 1993 album In Utero.[]
