Jost, 43, noted his structural disadvantage in these exchanges, referencing his skin tone, which Che, 42, often uses against him. Jost described the challenge of navigating the joke swaps, stating, “I don’t know if you noticed, I’m at a little bit of a structural disadvantage.”
The tradition involves each co-host delivering jokes written by the other during the season finale. In previous swaps, Che has made Jost insult his wife, Scarlett Johansson, and even prompted him to make racially insensitive comments.
However, Jost recounted one instance where he managed to rattle Che. He said, “The time I feel like I got him the most nervous, because he’s such a Kendrick Lamar fan, was when I started getting him weighing in on the feud, like talking directly to Kendrick.”
Jost could tell Che was genuinely worried about what he would have to say. In the 2024 segment, Che read Jost’s joke that called out Kendrick Lamar directly, saying, “Speaking of b—hes. I want to call out the biggest b—h of all: Kendrick Lamar. Or should I say littlest?”

Jost explained that he and Che approach the segment without knowing each other’s jokes. He mentioned the real concern that some jokes have sparked among SNL hosts and his family. Jost recalled a time when a host approached him after a joke, asking, “Are you OK?”
He shared that the situation often leads to concern from his family as well. Jost said, “My family, every year, is very worried for me.” He recalled a moment when an image of Rosa Parks accompanied a joke, prompting his mother to fear for their family’s reputation.
Jost concluded by expressing the thrill and terror that come with these exchanges, saying, “It is thrilling to do, even though it is also terrifying.”
