Marsalis first played with the Grateful Dead on March 29, 1990, at Nassau Coliseum. This performance included a notable rendition of “Eyes of the World,” later featured on the live album, Without a Net.
After Brent Mydland’s passing in July 1990, Hornsby joined the Grateful Dead in September 1990, alongside Vince Welnick. They performed together at the annual New Year’s Eve show on December 31, 1990, marking Hornsby and Marsalis’ first on-stage collaboration.
Marsalis contributed to Hornsby’s fourth album, Harbor Lights, enhancing tracks like “Talk of the Town” and “Rainbow’s Cadillac.” Their collaboration continued over the years, including performances at various festivals.
At the Jazz Festival, Marsalis played alongside Hornsby & The Noisemakers, performing songs such as “The End of Innocence” and “Way It Is.” The collaboration created a rich musical experience with layered keys and strings.
