dailyloe.com – On May 4, 2026, West Bengal’s Assembly election results are being counted for 293 seats. This follows over a month of intense campaigning. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) aims to retain power while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seeks its first win in the state.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress are also observing the results closely, hoping to regain influence after their losses in the 2021 elections. The Election Commission of India has deployed 165 additional counting observers and 77 police observers for this election.
Voter turnout reached 92.8% during the first phase on April 23, and 91.47% in the second phase on April 29. These figures mark the highest turnout in West Bengal since Independence, as reported by the Chief Electoral Officer.
As counting progresses, TMC leaders describe the situation as “fishy” due to several party candidates trailing behind. This has raised concerns among TMC supporters, prompting leaders to be cautious about declaring a victory.
After the first round of counting, BJP’s Dilip Ghosh is leading from the Kharagpur Sadar seat by over 3,000 votes. Ghosh has previously held this seat, which he considers his political base. Additionally, BJP candidate Ratna Debnath is also leading from the Panihati seat.
Debnath is notably the mother of a woman student who was tragically raped and murdered at R.G. Kar medical college and hospital. The election outcome remains crucial for all parties involved, especially as the counting continues.
