dailyloe.com – Washoe County, Nevada, has confirmed two cases of mpox, prompting health officials to issue a reminder about the importance of precautions for at-risk individuals.

Melvin Sanicas, the global medical lead for vaccines at Bavarian Nordic, stated that the detection of mpox in Washoe County has garnered international attention. He emphasized, “The detection in Washoe County is important news.”

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is a viral illness transmitted through prolonged skin-to-skin contact and contaminated items like clothing or bedding. Symptoms may include a rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and fatigue.

Dr. Chad Kingsley, district health officer for Northern Nevada Public Health, explained that mpox is part of the same family as other known illnesses like chickenpox and smallpox. He noted, “The reason it has pox on it [is] because it’s the same family.”

Northern Nevada Public Health is urging individuals at higher risk of exposure to take protective measures. Kingsley highlighted vaccination as a vital tool for prevention, although eligibility requirements may apply due to limited doses.

Health officials are also focusing on reducing transmission by identifying and monitoring close contacts of confirmed cases. Sanicas emphasized the importance of rapid contact identification, testing, and vaccination for high-risk individuals.

He stated, “The priority now is really rapid identification of close contacts of those people who have been infected, testing them, especially when symptoms appear, and vaccination, of course, for people at high risk.”
