dailyloe.com – Researchers discovered that doxorubicin, a widely available cancer drug, can inhibit herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in laboratory studies and mouse models. The University of Illinois Chicago team published these findings on April 2, 2026, suggesting a potential new treatment avenue. This development could address drug-resistant herpes infections affecting vulnerable populations.

Study leader Deepak Shukla, a virologist at UIC, highlighted the significance in a press release. He stated this opens an unexpected path toward treating resistant infections. Shukla emphasized that HSV-1 can have serious, sometimes life-threatening consequences for immunocompromised individuals.

Most people carry HSV-1 asymptomatically, experiencing only occasional cold sores. However, the virus poses severe risks for cancer patients and transplant recipients. It can cause sight-threatening eye infections and dangerous brain inflammation in these groups.

For forty years, acyclovir and related antivirals have been the primary treatment options. The discovery that doxorubicin might work offers a second potential tool. This drug is already commonly available in hospital pharmacies worldwide.

Doxorubicin, also known as Adriamycin, is a chemotherapy medication used against various cancers. The research shows it blocks HSV-1 replication in laboratory models. However, significant hurdles remain before clinical use against herpes.

The drug must undergo further testing and development for this new application. Researchers caution it is not yet ready for herpes treatment in patients. This finding represents early-stage research with promising implications.[]
