dailyloe.com – Vietnam Veterans Day is observed annually on March 29th to honor U.S. service members from a conflict that claimed over 58,000 American lives. The day underscores the long-term struggles many veterans face, including post-traumatic stress disorder. This national recognition provides a moment for reflection on service and sacrifice.

Florencio Aguayo, a 75-year-old Army veteran, represents those still grappling with the war’s trauma over five decades later. Drafted in 1968, he served as an 11 Bravo infantryman until 1970. Aguayo initially saw his draft notice as a positive direction for his life.

He was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division’s 27th Regiment, known as the Wolfhounds. This unit had a formidable reputation for bravery and aggression in combat. Aguayo served in both A Company and C Company during his tour.

His combat experience involved frequent engagements, often facing enemy fire three times a week. Aguayo recalls numerous instances where he narrowly escaped death. The constant danger left indelible psychological marks.

Today, Aguayo lives in Big Sur Valley, California, but the war remains a daily presence through his PTSD. The annual reunions with his former unit provide a crucial support network. His story is one of loss, struggle, and enduring hope.

Vietnam Veterans Day serves as a reminder of the human cost of war that extends far beyond the battlefield. It highlights the need for continued support for veterans’ mental health. The legacy of their service is remembered alongside the challenges they carry home.[]
