This partnership aims to power Riot’s operations with Terrestrial’s fourth-generation molten salt reactors. The agreement involves colocating advanced nuclear reactors at future data centers that Riot will construct.
The demand for data centers is escalating, largely driven by the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Major tech companies are heavily investing in chips to support large language models (LLMs) while needing reliable power to operate these technologies. Previously, many companies favored renewable energy sources like solar and wind, but the intense competition in AI has led to a shift towards securing energy contracts.
Gas-powered plants are currently stepping in to meet the immediate energy demands. However, nuclear power plants are anticipated to play a crucial role in fulfilling long-term energy requirements, helping companies balance their energy needs with green operation goals. In this collaboration, Terrestrial will apply its expertise in nuclear plant design and operational management, while Riot will focus on developing hyperscale data centers.
Riot Platforms has significant experience in bitcoin mining operations and plans to leverage this expertise in the growing data center sector. Terrestrial Energy utilizes Generation IV Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) technology, which features non-nuclear energy conversion systems located separately in the plant’s Thermal and Electric Facility. This configuration offers a competitive advantage over small modular reactors (SMRs) by allowing hybrid energy setups that can incorporate natural gas or other fuels to meet specific energy demands.
