dailyloe.com – The UK parliament has passed a law to ban cigarette sales for future generations. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill cleared its final hurdle on Monday. The House of Lords signed off on the last amendments. The bill now awaits royal assent from King Charles III.
Children who do not turn 18 before January 1, 2027 will be banned. They will never be permitted to buy cigarettes or tobacco products. The bill has been in the pipeline since early 2024. This was early in the current Labour government’s tenure.
The rules will apply across all four UK countries. These are England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They were developed with devolved parliaments in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh. Only the Maldives currently has a similar generational smoking ban.
New Zealand was the first country to enact such a law. It swiftly overturned the ban after a 2023 government change. The UK law will raise the legal purchase age annually. It starts on January 1, 2027, increasing from the current age of 18.
This means people born on or after January 1, 2009 will never be eligible. Retailers will face financial penalties for illegal sales. The government will gain powers for a new registration system. This aims to improve oversight of imported smoking and vaping products.
The bill expands the UK’s indoor smoking ban to outdoor spaces. This includes children’s playgrounds and areas outside schools and hospitals. Most indoor smoke-free spaces will also become vape-free. Smoking in designated areas outside pubs and bars will remain permissible.
Smoking and vaping will stay legal in people’s homes. Vaping will become illegal in cars with someone under 18 inside. This matches existing rules on smoking in vehicles. Advertising for smoking and vaping products will be banned.
People aged 18 or older can still purchase vaping products. Some items targeted at younger consumers are already outlawed. The UK has banned the sale of disposable vapes as part of the program. The new law represents a major shift in public health policy.
