dailyloe.com – The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College will host its final free cybersecurity session for businesses on Wednesday, April 22. The Zoom meeting runs from 12 to 1 p.m. HST. It is titled ‘Hook, Line, and Sinker: Real Stories of Successful Phishing Attacks’. This is the fourth session in a series for sole proprietors and registered businesses in Hawai‘i.
Jodi Ito, the UH chief information security officer, will discuss the topic. Ito said phishing remains the most effective attack method in 2026. She stated it targets the one element that cannot be easily patched: people. Furthermore, AI is making these scams more sophisticated by generating ‘personalized’ phishing emails.
Ito said this AI development makes detection even more challenging. The series of four sessions was funded by a grant from Google. It received $1 million in grants and wraparound support from Google’s Cybersecurity Clinics Fund. This funding helped establish the University of Hawaiʻi Cybersecurity Clinics.
The clinic is one of 15 new ones launching at higher education institutions nationwide. This launch was made possible through a collaboration. The collaboration is between Google and the Consortium of Cybersecurity Clinics. The final session will present real-life stories of successful phishing attacks.
