dailyloe.com – The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended the search for a crew member who fell off the Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship. This incident occurred while the ship was en route from Bermuda to Boston.
The crew member fell overboard approximately 12 miles off the coast of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. A security camera captured the fall, prompting a man overboard announcement to passengers.
Rescue efforts began early Sunday morning, with a Coast Guard helicopter arriving shortly after 1:15 a.m. to assist in the search. A crew from Coast Guard Station Provincetown also participated in the operation.
Later on Sunday morning, another helicopter was deployed, but the search was suspended just after noon. The suspension was due to a lack of new information regarding the crew member’s whereabouts.
The Norwegian Breakaway arrived at Boston’s Black Falcon Terminal on Sunday just before noon. Passengers received a letter informing them that embarkation would be delayed due to the search and rescue efforts.
The letter stated, “Overnight and into the early morning hours, the ship remained engaged in search and rescue efforts… These efforts required the vessel’s full attention before the voyage could safely resume toward Boston.”
A spokesperson for the cruise line emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “The safety, security, and well-being of our crew is our highest priority. Our thoughts are with the crewmember’s family during this difficult time.”
Rebecca Durandisse, a passenger from Needham, Massachusetts, described the situation as heartbreaking. She recalled hearing loud noises and seeing search crews on the water.
The identity of the crew member who fell overboard has not been disclosed. The cause of the incident remains unknown.
