dailyloe.com – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman discussed how different generations utilize ChatGPT during Sequoia Capital’s AI Ascent event last May. He noted that older users often replace Google with ChatGPT, while those in their 20s and 30s view it as a life advisor. College students, Altman stated, use ChatGPT almost like an operating system.

Altman explained that younger users employ complex setups to connect ChatGPT to various files, memorizing intricate prompts. He remarked, “I mean, that stuff, I think, is all cool and impressive.” He also pointed out that many young people consult ChatGPT before making significant life decisions.

A 2025 report from OpenAI indicated that college-aged individuals in the U.S. are particularly embracing ChatGPT. It noted that more than one-third of users aged 18 to 24 actively utilize the AI tool. This engagement is facilitated by ChatGPT’s memory of prior conversations, providing context for recommendations.

Altman highlighted that ChatGPT is used for a range of inquiries, including relationship advice, business questions, and even as a substitute for talk therapy. However, experts are divided on the safety of relying on AI for major life decisions.

A November 2023 study urged caution when using ChatGPT for safety-related information, emphasizing the need for ethical considerations. It also noted that users must understand the limitations of AI-generated advice. Conversely, other research has pointed out the potential for using ChatGPT for common advice.
