dailyloe.com – A powerful synthetic opioid has been detected in wastewater from dozens of Missouri schools, prompting a new public health warning. Local agencies in Springfield and Greene County are urging proactive measures after a study revealed its presence. The substance is nitazenes, a drug far stronger than fentanyl.

Thirty-seven schools across Missouri volunteered for a wastewater monitoring program. According to the Department of Public Safety-led report, nitazenes were found in 26 of those schools since January. The drug is appearing in counterfeit pills and unregulated products.

“Nitazenes are really, really powerful,” said Anna Kremer with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department. She stated they are five to ten times more potent than fentanyl. This significantly increases the risk of a fatal overdose.

The drug can be found in many different forms, officials warn. It can be in powders, pills, or vape liquids, often without the user’s knowledge. This makes illicit and unregulated substances particularly dangerous right now.

Local fire and health departments are encouraging the public to carry Naloxone. They advise people to learn how to use the overdose-reversal medication and to call 911. “We’re just encouraging the public to have Naloxone, know how to use it,” said Battalion Chief Christopher Roush.

Officials stress recognizing overdose signs like slow breathing or blue lips. Pinpoint pupils and unconsciousness are other critical indicators. Administering Naloxone can save a life if it is safe to do so.

Naloxone is available under brand names like Narcan or Revive. The Springfield Fire Department emphasizes its importance for community safety. This warning follows the concerning data from the school wastewater study.[]
