Idris Elba has removed himself from consideration, stating that the role is not a career goal for him, though he acknowledged it would fulfill a national desire if he were cast.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been considered a leading candidate, with reports in 2024 indicating that he had been formally offered the role. However, as time passed without confirmation, those rumors began to fade.
In February, it was revealed that Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, longtime custodians of the franchise, struck a billion-dollar deal to transfer creative control to Amazon MGM Studios. Following this, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos conducted a straw poll on X regarding the next Bond, with many responses favoring Henry Cavill.
Henry Cavill has also distanced himself from the role, stating that at 42, he feels he may be too old for a reboot. Meanwhile, the next director for the James Bond series has been confirmed as Denis Villeneuve, who will begin work on Bond 26 after completing Dune Part Three.
Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, is set to be the next screenwriter for the Bond franchise. An unnamed insider informed the Sun in April that Knight and Villeneuve are taking their time with the project. They aim to ensure the next installment is crafted correctly.
The insider added, “Bond won’t be back until 2028. The production mindset’s gone from ‘Let’s hurry this through’ to ‘Make sure we get this right.’” Denis Villeneuve desires a long break after Dune Part Three and has some broad ideas for the script, while Knight will work on drafts before finalizing the version.
Realistically, if pre-production can begin in January 2027, that would be considered a success.
