This ruling affects how race factors into redistricting, prompting Republican-led states to consider new congressional maps.
Lawmakers were set to convene for a special session next week, but Reeves canceled it after a judge was overruled on Black candidate representation.
The decision puts the effort to oust former January 6 Committee chairman Bennie Thompson in limbo.
Reeves stated, “Understand something, that maybe while it may be in the best interest of some individual politicians in Mississippi to talk about congressional redistricting, what happens in Mississippi doesn’t happen in a vacuum.”
He emphasized his commitment to doing what is best for Mississippi and America, indicating collaboration with the Trump administration.
Reeves countered claims of a flip-flop on the redistricting issue, mentioning that Mississippi’s primary has already passed, complicating any changes.
Despite this, he expressed support for efforts to change the GOP representation from 3-1 to 4-0 against Thompson, who has served for 33 years.
Thompson represents a predominantly Black and impoverished Delta region in Mississippi.
