dailyloe.com – Recent storms brought flooding back to parts of Milwaukee’s south side. Homes and a business reported new water damage. The area is still recovering from historic flooding last August. More rain is expected in the forecast.
Along South Fulton Street in Bay View, piles of debris lined the road Thursday night. Residents threw out water-damaged items from their basements. Neighbors said the damage was not as severe as last year. They still found the situation frustrating.
Residents were seen picking up dehumidifiers and fans. They tried to dry out before more rain arrives. The intersection of Howell and Oklahoma was underwater Wednesday night. A business at that location flooded again.
Michael Arenas is an insurance agent with Reilly’s Insurance Services. He said flooding has become almost an annual issue. “We’re kind of used to it over so many years,” Arenas said. Water often gets into the building’s basement.
Arenas pointed to window seals pushed out by floodwaters. “We even had some of these windows sealed up over here,” he said. “The flood actually pushed these out pretty good. We’re gonna have to get these fixed.”
He noted the flood pushed leaves and debris into the window wells. About a mile away, homeowner Allison Gipp listed damaged items. She had to throw out boxes, a TV, luggage, and paper goods. Sewage backed up through her floor drain.
Gipp said the sewage reached about three inches this time. “They’re saying, ‘Well, our biggest priority is not to have sewage in people’s basements,'” Gipp said. “Well… This is what keeps happening.”
In August, Gipp said her basement had about three feet of water. The cleanup is not as extensive this time. She said more storms could bring more work. “Hopefully it doesn’t get worse,” she added.[]
