dailyloe.com – Kevin McGonigle’s first month with the Tigers has been remarkably successful. The 21-year-old set a franchise record for left-handed hitters with 32 hits in April. This achievement surpasses legends like Ty Cobb and Lou Whitaker.
McGonigle also recorded 11 doubles in March-April, the most for a left-handed hitter and just two shy of the club record. He is the first Tigers rookie to achieve 32 hits in any calendar month since Willi Castro in 2020.
Reflecting on his month, McGonigle stated, “I mean, it’s definitely been a dream come true.” He has maintained the MLB’s longest current on-base streak of 26 starts, a record last achieved by a Tigers rookie in 1980.
If McGonigle extends his streak to 27 games, he will be compared to Dick Wakefield, who had a 29-game streak in 1943. His current hitting streak stands at 13 games, aiming to surpass Al Kaline’s 15-game streak from 1955.
As of now, McGonigle has played in 31 or 32 games, starting 30 of them. His consistent performance and ability to play shortstop have impressed many.
“It’s the staff here, the coaches,” he said, acknowledging their support in establishing a routine. He is adapting to new demands in his professional career, including recovery and training.
Despite minor injuries during the road trip, McGonigle has remained resilient. He is committed to his fitness regime, stating he is learning to take care of his body more effectively.
McGonigle is currently slashing .333/.420/.518 and leads American League rookies in multiple categories, including hits, doubles, and batting average. His outstanding performance marks him as a significant asset to the Tigers.
