The Luna Ring would measure approximately 6,800 miles in circumference and could reach widths of about 250 miles. It is designed to continuously generate power by harnessing sunlight as it moves across the lunar surface. The construction involves using lunar soil to create a base, which would then be covered in solar panels.

Electricity generated on the Moon would be transmitted to Earth using either microwaves or lasers directed at designated receiving stations. While supporters suggest that construction could begin as early as 2035, the concept faces significant technological and budgetary hurdles.

Delivering electricity from the Moon to Earth presents additional challenges, particularly in minimizing energy loss during transmission. Microwaves are favored for their ability to penetrate clouds more effectively than lasers. However, lasers offer precise targeting, raising safety concerns in case of failures.

This proposal is aligned with the broader concept of space-based solar power, which involves collecting sunlight above Earth’s atmosphere and sending it down to the surface. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency references this idea, noting its roots in Peter Glaser’s 1968 proposal and subsequent NASA studies.

One of the key advantages of utilizing the Moon for solar power is the stronger sunlight available in space compared to what reaches the Earth’s surface. As solar energy continues to decrease in cost, the Luna Ring presents a futuristic solution to meet energy demands.

Despite its promise, the realization of the Luna Ring hinges on overcoming substantial technical and financial obstacles. The ambitious nature of this project makes it sound like a vision from the future.
