dailyloe.com – Heath Ledger’s final weeks were marked by profound exhaustion and illness according to a close friend who lived with him. The Academy Award-winning actor died from an accidental prescription drug overdose in his New York City apartment in January 2008. His death occurred shortly after he completed filming his iconic role as the Joker in The Dark Knight.

Friend and dialect coach Gerry Grennell provided a detailed account to People magazine. Grennell stated Ledger was exhausted both emotionally and physically during this period. The actor was battling a pneumonia-type illness that prevented him from sleeping properly.

Grennell recalled hearing Ledger wander the apartment at night unable to rest. He would urge the actor to return to bed for work the next day. Ledger would simply respond that he could not sleep despite taking medication.

Alongside his health struggles, Ledger grappled with separation from his young family. He had split from actress Michelle Williams months before his death. Grennell said Ledger desperately missed his daughter Matilda and longed to see her.

The actor’s overdose resulted from a combination of prescription medications. These included painkillers, anti-anxiety drugs, and sleeping pills. The New York City medical examiner officially ruled the death accidental.

Ledger had recently finished work on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus before his passing. His performance as the Joker was released posthumously later that year. He received a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role.[]
