Sheeran, 35, explained his decision to shave his hair, stating, “Yes I’ve shaved my hair. I wanted to shave it to signify a fresh start. A lot of new beginnings in my life atm. I love it, thinking of keeping it this way.” He also disclosed that he has been battling shingles for the past month.
Regarding his shingles experience, Sheeran remarked, “I wouldn’t recommend it, but on the mend now.” Shingles, or herpes zoster, is caused by the varicella zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC notes that individuals who have had chickenpox are at a higher risk of developing shingles later in life. After recovery from chickenpox, the virus can remain inactive in the body and reactivate years later, leading to shingles.
Shingles typically lasts three to five weeks, with a rash that develops blisters, scabbing over within 7 to 10 days, and healing within two to four weeks, as stated by Johns Hopkins Medicine. Symptoms can include pain, itching, fever, and a painful rash.
Sheeran is among several celebrities who have publicly discussed their experiences with shingles. Actress and director Elizabeth Banks shared her struggle last year, which caused her to miss work. She later received the shingles vaccine.
Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, 26, also revealed his ongoing battle with shingles on “The Pat McAfee Show.” He mentioned, “I’m going on eight weeks of face shingles right now. I haven’t been able to get rid of it.” Haliburton discussed the challenges he faced with various medications and the impact on his weight.
