dailyloe.com – AMD’s new Ryzen 9950X3D2 CPU with dual 3D V-cache is the fastest chip for gaming according to new reviews. The performance lead over its predecessors is minimal, however. The chip also adds around 25% to the price tag. AMD’s selective review sample distribution has also drawn criticism from several publications.
KitGuru highlighted that the 9950X3D2 only beats its predecessor by a few percent. This makes the new chip hard to justify based on cost. HotHardware noted its impressive all-around performance and AM5 compatibility. It also highlighted the chip’s increased power consumption as a negative point.
Phoronix noted the 9950X3D2’s potential for professional applications. The publication called it a good fit for those who cannot afford a Threadripper setup. Hardware Unboxed criticized the chip’s pricing, suggesting it lacks good value for around $1,000. It is an impressive chip but does not justify the price hike over the 9950X3D.
Ars Technica showcased the chip’s impressive performance. It did not find much improvement over much cheaper chips, however. Club386 called the 9950X3D2 a ‘halo product’ with little real audience. The publication said it is ‘too much of a good thing.’
Der8auer called the new chip pointless despite its raw power in many tasks. The new chip is very powerful and likely to remain the most capable of its generation. It is not worth buying for most consumers, according to reviews. The selective distribution of review samples is also seen as troubling.
AMD did not send review chips to GamersNexus, TechPowerUp, HardwareLuxx, eTeknix, or PCWatch. The list of publications that received chips is shorter than normal. It is unclear if this is due to previous coverage or limited availability. GamersNexus is likely to review the chip after buying it at retail.
