dailyloe.com – Ty Gibbs is still pursuing his first NASCAR Cup Series win as the season resumes at Bristol Motor Speedway. The 23-year-old driver for Joe Gibbs Racing has made 130 career Cup starts. His best finishes are two second-place results in 2024 and 2025. The question is when his first victory will arrive.
Gibbs first signaled his potential with a stunning Xfinity Series win in 2021. He won at the Daytona Road Course on February 20, 2021. That victory came in his first-ever national series start at age 18. He was the third-youngest winner in series history at that time.
Only future champions Joey Logano and Chase Elliott won at a younger age. Gibbs also achieved a unique feat with that debut. No driver had ever won with zero national-series experience before his victory.
He continued his success throughout the 2021 season. Gibbs won three more races on a part-time schedule that year. He then captured seven more wins during the 2022 campaign. That season culminated in a dramatic Xfinity Series championship over Noah Gragson.
Gibbs clinched the title just weeks after turning 20 years old. His record demonstrates an ability to win against tough competition. It has long seemed a matter of when, not if, he would win at the Cup level. Driving the No. 54 Toyota for JGR, victory appeared inevitable.
Yet that first Cup win has taken longer than many expected. His best finishes so far are a pair of runner-up results. He finished second at Darlington Raceway in 2024. He also placed second in the 2025 Chicago Street Race.
The list of modern-era drivers who took many races to win is sparse. Only Ricky Rudd took more than 130 starts before his first win. Rudd needed 161 career races to reach Victory Lane. He later won more than ten times in his career.
Other drivers took even longer to secure their first victory. Sterling Marlin did not win until his 279th start. Michael Waltrip was winless in his first 462 races. Waltrip finally won at Daytona in 2001 on a fateful day.
Gibbs is not yet at that prolonged winless stage. He remains only 23 years old. Several notable drivers won their first races at older ages. Ricky Rudd, Kyle Petty, and Alex Bowman all won at age 26.
Austin Dillon was 27 when he earned his first victory. Sterling Marlin was 37 for his first win. Michael Waltrip was 38 when he finally broke through. An early career start can provide experience without wasting prime years.
