dailyloe.com – Tucson police are preparing for large crowds as the University of Arizona Wildcats compete in the NCAA Final Four this Saturday. Captain Lauren Pettey of the Tucson Police Department announced an enhanced law enforcement presence. Officers will be stationed on University Boulevard, Congress Street, and Fourth Avenue.
Captain Pettey, who leads NCAA safety planning, stated officers will have riot gear ready. The goal is to ensure fans can celebrate safely. Additional resources will be deployed to manage the anticipated crowds.
This security response is informed by past violent incidents following major Wildcats games. In 2001, riots erupted downtown after Arizona lost the national title to Duke. Another destructive riot occurred in 2014 after an Elite Eight loss to Wisconsin.
During those past events, frustrated fans gathered in streets and set cars on fire. They also threw bottles and cans at police officers. These incidents have shaped current safety planning.
Local business owners are aware of this history but hope for calmer celebrations. Jonathan Graham of Frog & Firkin bar noted the police used tear gas and sandbags in past riots. He suggested the climate on University Boulevard may be more relaxed now.
Graham said his bar is preparing for potential trouble regardless. They will only admit customers with reservations to control capacity. The establishment has all employees and extra security personnel ready for the event.
The Tucson Police Department will also conduct traffic enforcement starting Saturday morning. Parking meters on University Boulevard will be covered with hoods. This prepares for the street to be blocked by barricades for crowd control.[]
