The NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey shows only 37% of adults approve of his performance. A significant 63% disapprove, with half strongly disapproving. The poll was conducted and released on April 19, 2026.
Two-thirds of respondents disapproved of Trump’s handling of inflation and the conflict with Iran. This comes after Trump campaigned on tackling inflation and avoiding foreign entanglements in 2024. The economy remains the top issue for 29% of Americans. Threats to democracy followed at 24%, with health care at 12% and crime at 10%.
Inflation and the rising cost of living is the dominant economic concern for 45% of those polled. Just 32% of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of inflation and cost of living. A full 68% disapprove of his handling of this issue. Within that group, 52% said they strongly disapprove.
The share of Americans who strongly disapprove of Trump’s inflation handling is up 7 points. Another 16% said they somewhat disapprove of his approach. Broadly, only one-third of Americans believe the country is on the right track. Two-thirds believe it is on the wrong track, marking the most pessimistic outlook since Trump retook office.
While Trump still commands overwhelming support from his base, Republican support has softened. In the new poll, 83% of Republicans gave Trump a positive approval rating. This is down 4 points from a poll in late January and early February. The share of Republicans who strongly approve has dropped 6 points, from 58% to 52%.
The poll results underscore challenges for Republicans defending congressional majorities. The midterm elections are set for this year. Americans’ frustrations center on the economy and the Iran war. These issues are central as the political landscape takes shape for the coming vote.
