The San Diego State guard has narrowed his choices to seven programs, including the Kentucky Wildcats. Byrd’s finalists are Kentucky, Baylor, Louisville, Providence, Texas, Vanderbilt, and Cincinnati. The 6-foot-6 guard has one season of eligibility remaining for the 2026-27 campaign. He is coming off a season where he was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year.
During the past season, Byrd averaged 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He also recorded impressive averages of 1.9 steals and 1.2 blocks, highlighting his defensive versatility. His shooting splits were 40.5% from the field and 30.8% from three-point range on 4.3 attempts per game.
If Byrd chooses Kentucky, head coach Mark Pope would hope for an offensive leap similar to former Aztec Lamont Butler’s. Butler and Byrd were teammates during the 2022-23 season when Byrd redshirted. Butler notably improved his scoring during his final collegiate season at Kentucky.
