dailyloe.com – On Wednesday morning, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced the cancellation of a special legislative session to redraw the state’s supreme court districts.

Reeves, a Republican, stated that he does expect the state to redraw its four congressional districts before the 2027 elections.

During an appearance on SuperTalk radio, he mentioned that redrawing the congressional districts in favor of Republicans before the upcoming midterm elections would be challenging.

The midterm elections are scheduled for November, and Reeves indicated that immediate redistricting could potentially hurt Republicans in congressional races.

Mississippi held its primary elections for congressional seats in March, prior to the supreme court’s Louisiana v Callais ruling, which affected the Voting Rights Act.

Reeves noted that redrawing the congressional districts to eliminate Democratic seats could invalidate primary results and make Republican areas more competitive.

In a post on X, Reeves clarified his expectations, stating, “I expect lawmakers to redraw congressional lines BETWEEN NOW and 2027 elections!”

He emphasized the need for redrawing legislative and Supreme Court lines as well.

Reeves specifically mentioned targeting Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson’s seat for redistricting.

He is in discussions with the Trump administration regarding the timing and approach for redistricting.

“It is not a question of if, it’s a question of when,” Reeves said about the focus on Thompson’s district.

Thompson represents Mississippi’s second congressional district, which is approximately 275 miles long and predominantly Black.
