dailyloe.com – San Antonio has responded to a Texas ban on rainbow crosswalks by painting rainbow sidewalks. Governor Greg Abbott ordered the removal of the colorful crosswalks, citing safety issues and political messaging concerns.
Robert A. Chavez, a local resident, expressed pride in the new sidewalks, stating, “They are a symbol that we are still here.” The decision to remove the crosswalks came after city officials faced the possibility of losing approximately $80 million in state funding.
Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones shared her perspective, noting the need to prioritize the city’s financial wellbeing. She said, “I appreciate what our rainbow sidewalks represent… my pride is not tied to this paint. It’s in my heart and head.” City Council member Jalen McKee-Rodriguez proposed the idea of painting the sidewalks, as sidewalks fall outside state jurisdiction.
