One family from Oahu is facing high costs as they plan to attend a senior night in Hilo. Jesus Hoomalu mentioned they are considering flying Southwest to Hilo and Hawaiian Airlines back, noting, “it’s like 150 each way,” totaling around $600 for the family.
Jerry Agrusa, a professor at the U.H. School of Travel Industry Management, stated, “Never before” have interisland air fares been this high. He explained that a shortage of flights and increased fuel surcharges are driving prices up.
Since the Iran War began, domestic air fares have surged 18%, while international flights have increased over $100 due to jet fuel prices doubling to over $220 a barrel. Agrusa noted that this is significantly higher than gasoline prices.
The rising fares may deter some travelers, particularly locals planning staycations. Agrusa highlighted that the 25 percent of residents taking outer island trips may reduce their travel plans this summer.
High school teams are also feeling the financial strain. Waialua High School surf coach Spencer Suitt is monitoring flight prices for the upcoming state surfing championships in Maui. He found a flight from Honolulu to Kahului costing $638.
Suitt noted that while his athletes booked their flights early, families wishing to attend face considerable expenses. He mentioned additional costs like rent-a-car, hotel, and food, with parking at the airport costing another thirty dollars a day.
He expressed hope that the ongoing conflict will end and prices will stabilize. The situation remains challenging as families and teams navigate the high costs of interisland travel.
