dailyloe.com – A recent report suggests that Sony may be introducing online DRM for all PS5 and PS4 digital games. Players could be required to connect their consoles to the internet every 30 days to maintain their game licenses.
According to the game preservation site Does it Play?, this DRM issue is reportedly an unintentional bug. An anonymous insider indicated that Sony may have inadvertently caused this issue while attempting to fix another exploit.
Popular modder Lance McDonald initially reported the online check-in requirement through a series of posts on X. He claimed that all digital titles purchased on the PlayStation Store would now necessitate an online check-in every 30 days.
McDonald stated, “Hugely terrible DRM has now been rolled out to all PS4 and PS5 digital games. Every digital game you buy now requires an online check-in every 30 days.” He emphasized that failure to connect within this timeframe could lead to a temporary revocation of the game license.
Newly purchased digital games are said to be affected by this requirement, while older purchases reportedly remain exempt. Additionally, the usual primary console setting may not allow users to bypass this new rule.
McDonald also mentioned that if a player does not connect their console to the internet within 30 days, they would lose their game license. A screenshot shared by McDonald showed a PS4 digital game featuring a new “remaining time” category on its page.
Interestingly, while PS5 titles do not display this new DRM category, they are still said to be subject to the same 30-day check-in requirement. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from Sony regarding this rumor.
For the time being, this information should be treated as speculation until Sony provides a clarifying statement. Players and fans are awaiting further details on the situation.
