dailyloe.com – Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated that a one-off tax cut for Australian workers is a possibility ahead of the federal budget on May 12, 2026.
He acknowledged the ongoing speculation regarding tax changes, stating that voters will have the opportunity to decide on these changes.
The Coalition has expressed concerns about the inflationary effects of a potential tax cut but has not yet taken a definitive stance.
Labor ministers have not ruled out a one-off tax break as a measure for cost-of-living relief leading up to the budget.
Reports suggest that Labor is considering an earned income offset ranging from $200 to $300 for every taxpayer in Australia.
This proposed measure would apply only to earned income and not to investment income.
Responding to questions regarding the offset, Albanese stated the budget would align with Labor’s values of inclusivity.
He remarked, “It’s a whole lot of speculation out there in budgets, and that’s what happens. Some of it’s right, some of it’s wrong.”
Treasurer Jim Chalmers noted that speculation about the budget is often inaccurate, but he emphasized that current tax cuts are already in progress.
Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson warned that the proposed measure could exacerbate inflation, indicating uncertainty about the Coalition’s support for the offset.
He stated, “We can’t until I see the detail, but we know the consequences.” He referenced the International Monetary Fund’s warnings about the potential inflationary impact of such measures.
Albanese reiterated that voters would be the judges of any tax changes introduced in the budget.
Additionally, the government is expected to modify property tax settings, including cuts to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount.
