The eight straight losses are the team’s most since a nine-game skid in 2018. The Phillies used an opener and changed their batting order, but neither move prevented the defeat.
Pitcher Taijuan Walker expressed frustration after the game. ‘Just not going our way right now,’ Walker said. ‘We’re not executing. Just kind of in a rut. When you get in these ruts, it’s hard to get out of sometimes. And right now we’re just not getting out of it.’
Walker served as the bulk pitcher Wednesday after left-hander Kyle Backhus pitched the first inning. Backhus gave up one run on two hits. Walker did not fare much better, allowing five runs, though only four were earned.
The Phillies led 2-1 in the second inning before a misplayed ball in center field changed the game. Center fielder Justin Crawford and second baseman Edmundo Sosa miscommunicated on a play, allowing the Cubs to tie the score. Philadelphia never regained the lead and did not score again.
