dailyloe.com – Transit officials in New York and New Jersey are advising residents to work from home during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament is set to cause significant travel disruptions, particularly around MetLife Stadium, which will host key matches.
Port Authority’s executive director, Kathryn Garcia, stated that if individuals can work remotely, they should do so. The expectation is that around 40,000 fans will use public transit per match, causing peak congestion.
Peak travel times will coincide with rush hour on critical dates, particularly June 22 and June 30. Officials are also discouraging rideshare services, noting they will not be reliable due to expected traffic increases.
Public transit is being promoted as the primary means of transport, despite anticipated crowding. A round-trip ticket on NJ Transit from New York City to MetLife Stadium is projected to cost about $150, which is approximately 775% higher than the usual fare.
Penn Station will face additional restrictions, as the NJ Transit section will be limited to ticketed World Cup attendees for four hours before and three hours after each match. Regular commuters will be effectively shut out during these times.
