dailyloe.com – The NCAA announced Tuesday that the University of Iowa must vacate four football victories from the 2023 season. This penalty stems from impermissible contact with quarterback Cade McNamara before he entered the transfer portal. The NCAA said Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant Jon Budmayr participated in the violations. They made 13 phone calls and sent two text messages to McNamara prior to his portal entry in November 2022.
McNamara left the University of Michigan a few days after entering the portal. He subsequently transferred to the University of Iowa. The NCAA ruled that McNamara was ineligible for the four wins he participated in during the 2023 season. Those victories were over Utah State, Iowa State, Western Michigan, and Michigan State.
McNamara posted a 4-1 record as Iowa’s starting quarterback in 2023. His season was cut short by a knee injury. The school had already imposed penalties on the coaches involved. Both Kirk Ferentz and Jon Budmayr were suspended for Iowa’s 2024 season opener. This suspension was a school-imposed penalty for the violations.[]
