dailyloe.com – Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., has introduced a new proposal to renew a significant U.S. spy power. This initiative comes after two unsuccessful votes earlier this month. The legislation focuses on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which is set to expire on April 30.
Section 702 permits U.S. intelligence agencies to intercept electronic communications of foreign nationals outside the United States. Approximately 350,000 foreign targets are monitored, and communications with Americans may also be included in this data collection.
Lawmakers concerned about privacy from both parties have pushed for a requirement of specific court approval before federal law enforcement can review Americans’ information collected through this program. The absence of a warrant requirement contributed to the failure of a recent 18-month extension and a separate five-year renewal vote.
Officials from the Trump administration and previous administrations argued that imposing a warrant requirement could hinder law enforcement efforts and threaten national security. Johnson’s new proposal aims to reauthorize the program for three years without a warrant requirement.
Instead, the bill includes provisions for the FBI to provide monthly explanations of reviews related to Americans’ information to an oversight official. Additionally, it proposes criminal penalties for willful abuse of the program.
President Trump expressed his support for the program on Truth Social, stating, “I am willing to risk the giving up of my Rights and Privileges as a Citizen for our Great Military and Country.” He emphasized that FISA is crucial for protecting both military personnel overseas and citizens at home from foreign terror threats.
Trump noted that the program has already prevented numerous attacks, underscoring its importance for national security.
